Background of the study
Twitter threads in Nigeria offer a unique glimpse into the evolving morphosyntactic practices that characterize digital communication. These threads—extended sequences of connected tweets—are a breeding ground for linguistic experimentation, where users adapt conventional grammar to suit the platform’s brevity and immediacy (Ibrahim, 2023). Nigerian Twitter users often modify sentence structures, utilize unconventional punctuation, and employ abbreviated forms, resulting in distinctive morphosyntactic patterns. This study investigates how the inherent constraints of Twitter threads foster morphosyntactic variation and contribute to language change. Statement of the problem
Although morphosyntactic variation is evident in Nigerian Twitter threads, there is limited research comparing these innovations across different thread contexts. Many studies treat digital language uniformly, ignoring the specific effects of Twitter’s character limitations and interactive format on language structure (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hinders a detailed understanding of how morphosyntactic changes occur in real-time online interactions and how they affect traditional grammatical frameworks, limiting the development of comprehensive models of digital language change (Ibrahim, 2023).
